What is Supportive Housing?

Supportive Housing is safe and very affordable housing for at-risk persons with disabilities. What Supportive Housing truly is, is a program to save lives by moving people from despair to hope and giving them the opportunity to stabilize their lives. Everyone in Arkansas depends on having a home they can afford, although some may have to access a variety of services to support their life in their community. For some Arkansans, long-term affordability and services that help them to stay housed and stay healthy are particularly important.

What’s important to know about supportive housing is that it is a permanent, affordable housing resource for our community that provides homes for people that want and need reliable support services to stay in their community.

The supportive housing program is a particularly effective approach to creating housing for people in extreme poverty, who are often homeless, elderly, and disabled. Persons living with disabilities often find themselves in financial distress due to mounting medical bills, loss of income from work, or family difficulties, with many living in shelters, on the streets, in abandoned cars, or in severely inadequate housing. This diverse group of our citizens have two things in common: 1) they have traditionally been excluded from the community housing market and have been homeless, lived in institutional settings, or maintained substandard living arrangements; and 2) are entitled to decent, affordable, safe housing and access to the services they need to remain healthy and self-reliant.
